RTU(Remote Terminal Unit) is an electronic device to monitor and measure sensors and equipment installed at the remote site, monitor and control on-site signal and industrial equipment. RTU can convert the measurement status and signals into data which can transmit on communication media, can also convert data from central computer into command to control the equipment functions.
RTU is core device that constitutes the enterprise’s comprehensive automation system, consists of signal input/output modules, microprocessors, wired/wireless communication devices, power adapter and casings. It is controlled by microprocessor and support network systems.
RTU hardware include CPU, memory, different kind of input and output port and function module, these modules are integrated into the circuit board, circuit board wiring makes function modules connect each other. CPU is central system of RTU which responsible for processing various input signals, all data will be completed output after processing. Memory is memory system of RTU, can save primary or persistent data.
RTU is durable on-site intelligent processor, it is independent data acquisition and control unit. Its function is control remote field equipment, get equipment data and transmit the data to the SCADA system dispatch center.
RTU function: monitor, control and alarm field signals and industrial equipment, some RTU has series of metering functions for specific application areas such as flow accumulation.
Application
Comparing with normal programmable controller PLC, RTU has excellent communication capabilities and larger storage capacity, suitable for harsher temperature and humidity environments, provide more computing capabilities. RTU is widely used in SCADA systems in oil and gas, water conservancy, electric power dispatching, municipal dispatching and other industries.
DTU (Data Transfer unit) is wireless terminal equipment, can convert serial data to IP data or IP data to serial data so that the data can be transmitted through wireless communication network. Insert sim card with GRPS function into DTU, when DTU turn on it’ll register GRPS network first then connect with data processing center.
DTU hardware mainly include CPU control module, wireless communication module and power module.
On the front end DTU connect customer’s equipment with RS232 or RS485 port. When connect with power and turn of, DTU will register GPRS network first, then it’ll establish a socket connection with the background center preset in the DTU, background center is server of socket, DTU is customer of socket, this means DTU couldn’t finish data transmitting without background software support. After connection established, front end equipment and background center can transmit data through DTU, this is bidirectional transmission.
