What’s modem and what’s router?

Router is one equipment to connect local area network and wan network, it can auto select and set routing according to channel situation with best way to send signal in sequence, router is hub of internet network, internet policeman.

The advantage of router is suitable big scale internet network and complicate topology structure, load sharing and optimal path, can deal multi-media better. High security, prevent unnecessary traffic, save bandwidth of local area network, decrease host load burden. The disadvantage of router is it doesn’t support non-routing protocol, installation is complicated and the cost is very high too.

Act as hub of connection between different networks, router system construct the main body of international internet network based on TCP/IP, also known as skeleton of internet. In campus network, area network and whole internet field of study and research, router technology always in the core position, its development process and trend become a microcosm of entire internet research.

What’s modem? Computer should connect modem to make dialing to access internet, modem connect telephone line and router, both modem and router is for internet access.

Modem used for different medium network signal transfer between different networks, for example to convert signal of ADSL, optical fiber, wired communication etc. to standard computer network signal.

Router is to redistribute internet signal, in one words it can make one network cable connect more computers or some other equipments.

Simply speaking, modem is like one factory, router works like wholesaler and retailer, switch works like logistics, you’ve use to router if you have more equipments to connect internet, if the quantity exceeded the router connector then you’ve to use switch to expand more connectors.
