Serial port is specially designed for WAN, it can connect to ISDN, PPP, Frame Relay and many other types network, you’ve to set clock frequency (DCE, DTE) first if you want to use it, the algorithm of routing table is formed on this interface also.

Ethernet port is for LAN, has functions required by LAN only. It does not have the functions required by WAN interface, serial port does not have functions of LAN Ethernet port, so the two interfaces cannot be swapped.

1.Main body different

1.1.Serial port: Serial port is extended interface that uses serial communication method.

1.2.Lan port: Ethernet port is the port for network data connection in Ethernet network.

2.Transfer speed different

2.1.Serial port: The amount of data transferred simultaneously through serial port is relatively small, but transmission speed is faster.

2.2.Lan port: The amount of data transferred simultaneously through Ethernet port is large, but transmission speed is slow.

3.Transmission interference different

3.1.Serial port: Serial port is single channel, communication line is simple, there is no mutual interference so the transmission is less prone to errors.

3.2.Lan port: Due to mutual interference (crosstalk) between 8-bit channels, Ethernet port transmission is prone to errors.

4.Application different

4.1.Serial port: Used for next-hop routing conversion, each VLAN can only access external network after being directed through a 5g industrial cellular router with TRUNK.

4.2.Lan port: It is the most widely used LAN communication method, it is a protocol also. Ethernet protocol defines a series of software and hardware standards to connect different computer together.

5.Composition different

5.1.Serial port: According to electrical standards and protocols, serial port include RS-232-C, RS-422, RS485, etc., RS-232-C, RS-422 and RS-485 standards only specify the electrical characteristics of the interface and do not involve connectors, cables or protocols.

5.2.Lan port: The basic elements of the network include switches, 5g industrial cellular routers, hubs, optical fibers and ordinary network cables, as well as Ethernet protocols and communication rules. The port for network data connection in Ethernet is Ethernet interface.
